The quality seems generally good, but doesn’t have some of the benchmark brands (like YKK zippers)

Build

High quality, durable material made with Timbuk2’s signature craftsmanship

How much does it weigh? This bag was the second lightest in the carry-on travel backpack category

Packability

How heavy is it? Super light! This is the lightest bag in the Carry-On Travel Backpack category

It can pack in a lot of stuff, but due to lack of frame (which makes it light) can get barrel shaped when stuffed.

Functionality

This bag is very simple but gets the job done well.

There is not too much that grabs my attention about this bag.

Originality

Looks great and has a rugged yet sleek look about it.

In regards to price this bag is on of the top three leaders in the carry-on travel backpack category

Value

Comes at a great price. We consider it much better valued than the other travel backpacks reviewed

reasons to travel with this

  • Lockable zippers keeping your items safe
  • Great organizational pockets for smaller items and documets
  • Solid briefcase handle and shoulder strap
  • Sleeve for attaching to roller bags makes it great for combining with checked luggage
  • Main compartment divides into two equal parts to allow for more organization of clothes
  • Straps stow away which help it keep from getting tangled in overheads or when checked

  • The lightest backup in our carry-on travel backpack category
  • Comes with 4 handles which allows for easy grabbing
  • One of the few backpacks that includes a well thought though shoulder strap for “briefcase” mode
  • High quality clips for the optional backpack straps.
  • Laptop sleeve close to back allowing for good weight distribution
  • Straps stow away which help it keep from getting tangled in overheads or when checked

things to consider

  • Shoulder strap tends to slip off shoulders due to soft fabric
  • Connections for backpack straps don’t seem to be heavy duty (plastic and not metal)
  • No designated laptop sleeve (there is a pocket that could easily work as laptop sleeve but is not padded)
  • Lack of internal frame (which keeps it light) causes bag to bulge into a barrel shape when packed tight
  • Because of lack of weight bearing hip-belt all the weight is on shoulders

  • Similar to other backpacks, the straps can be uncomfortable with extended use
  • Because of lack of weight bearing hip-belt all the weight is on shoulders
  • No good organization for smaller items
  • Some complaints of lack of internal frame (but this keeps the weight down)
  • Not much padding for laptop sleeve (again this keeps the weight down)

Brief Thoughts

There is nothing incredibly fancy or snazzy about the EC Adventure Weekender, but for business travel you don’t want snazzy anyways! This is a bag that works great for the business traveler who needs doesn’t want to check luggage (or a great addition to checked bags due to the pass through that allows you to slip over handles of wheeled bag). With the classic briefcase look to it, you would feel just fine bringing it into a meeting if the situation required you to.

My friend and fellow TWT reviewer suggested we include the Timbuk2 Wingman Duffle because he owns it and loves it. Though it didn’t end up in the top three it was by an incredibly close margin (a $20 price difference!). This is the lightest bag in the travel backpack category. Here at TWT we love Timbuk2 for their creativity, quality, and style. This travel backpack exemplifies all of these qualities in the design and creation of this bag. A great bag at a great price!

in summary

Both these backpacks are similar in size, weight, and price… but what sets the Timbuk2 Wingman Duffle apart is its overall look (I think it looks better) and its designated laptop sleeve close to the bag which helps with weight distribution and balance. Also, it has handles on all sides making it all around the more functional bag.
