The internal LightWire frame and solid construction have proven to hold up over time

Build

Solid construction and materials. Built to last a lifetime

How heavy is it? Osprey has done a great job of adding many needed features yet keeping the weight down.

Packability

Because of being a no nonsense bag they manage to keep the bag very light

Other than the placement of the laptop sleeve it performs incredibly well from packing to carrying

Functionality

Covers all the basics and well thought through except for lack of a laptop sleeve

This is a no nonsense backpack that gets the job done. Not as stylistic as some of the others.

Originality

Simple and yet stylish in its own way. Has a sort of elegance to it.

This was the best priced backpack in the Travel Backpack category

Value

This is the most expensive bag in the Travel Backpack category. But get a bag to last a lifetime.

reasons to travel with this

  • Has a great LightWire frame that adds next to no weight, yet helps maintain the structure of the bag when fully packed
  • Lockable zippers keeping your items safe
  • Great construction of bag and quality materials
  • Straps stow away which help it keep from getting tangled in overheads or when checked
  • One of the few bags that came with an included shoulder strap (for when backpack straps are stowed away)
  • Padded hip-belt helps keep some weight off shoulders
  • Best priced travel backpack out those compared

  • All around solid construction that holds up under rough travel conditions
  • Great YKK lockable zippers that function well and don’t get stuck or hard to open
  • The sturdy handles on three sides make it easy to quickly grab from any angle
  • Straps stow away which help it keep from getting tangled in overheads or when checked
  • Much lighter than many of the other bags reviewed
  • The large opening allows for easy access to all contents

things to consider

  • When it is cinched down it is difficult to open zippers
  • The laptop sleeve is not up against the travelers back which makes for awkward weight distribution
  • Front pockets could use a little more organizational pockets
  • Impossible to reach water bottle when wearing backpack

  • Because of lack of weight bearing hip-belt all the weight is on shoulders
  • There is no laptop sleeve which can complicate when packing time comes
  • Both the hip-strap and the shoulder strap are extra costs
  • Not much organization, Tom Bihn recommends buying packing cubes (though it seems that all those who did buy packing cubes say they would never go back to packing without them!)

Brief Thoughts

This is a fantastic bag for a fantastic price. With many features and the ability to purchase in two sizes (S/M and M/L) this is a bag that can appeal to many different sizes of travelers. Additionally it has a padded hip belt that offers more support than other bags in this category. It is hard to find complaints from reviewers in regards to this bag except for the placement of the laptop sleeve since it is placed toward the outside and not up against the back.

The interesting thing about the Tom Bihn Aeronaut is that it is hard to find negative reviews for it. With few exceptions, the people who own it, love it! Tom Bihn has a proven track record of making high quality bags. Though the price tag is a little higher than the other bags, you know you are getting quality in your purchase. This bag is incredibly versatile and could be taken on a whole range of trips from business to pleasure. For the traveler wishing to invest in a bag to last for many years then the Tom Bihn Aeronaut is my recommendation.

in summary

The reason I chose the Tom Bihn Aeronaut is that, despite its high price tag, it is built to last (and proven to do so).  If you are the kind of traveler that prefers high quality (regardless off price) then I would recommend the Aeronaut. For those looking to safe a few bucks and still have a great bag then the Osprey Farpoint 40L is the bag for you.
